What is titration?
Titration is a carefully monitored process used to determine the most effective type and dose of ADHD medication for you. It ensures your treatment is safe, effective, and tailored to your individual needs, minimising side effects while maximising benefits.
How does titration work?
1. Starting medication
After your clinician prescribes an ADHD medication, you’ll begin with a low dose. This allows your body to adjust to the treatment gradually.
2. Regular monitoring
Throughout titration, we encourage you to monitor your response to treatment. We advise reflecting on your target symptoms (identified during your first titration appointment) and side effects. We recommend recording these observations in your chosen record such as a diary, journal or on your phone. By doing this, you can bring your observations to your scheduled appointments and discuss them with your practitioner.
3. Finding the right balance
The goal of titration is to find the “optimal dose” – the amount of medication that provides the best symptom relief with minimal side effects. This process can take several weeks to complete, as adjustments are made gradually.
Why is titration important?
ADHD medications affect everyone differently. Titration ensures your treatment is safe and effective by:
Personalising your medication to suit your unique needs.
Reducing the risk of unwanted side effects.
Ensuring long-term treatment success.
